During my last visit in Hsinchu, Taiwan, I stayed again at my favorite hotel in the area; the Sheraton Hsinchu. Time for a review!
Lobby & Restaurants
The lobby of the Sheraton Hsinchu is impressive. A big open space with high ceilings, artwork, and a large front desk area, with sufficient staff for check-in. A much better check-in experience than I had at the Episode Hotel, also in Hsinchu. All it takes, is a well-staffed front-end desk with an efficient check-in procedure!
The staircase, with colourful lightning, leads to ‘Feast’, which is the all day dining and buffet restaurant.
The breakfast buffet really has everything you would want; an extensive western as well as asian buffet. Plenty of options. Having said that, at the time of year when the Taiwan mango’s are at its best, I would have expected fresh mango’s at breakfast. However, these were nowhere to be found! So, there is one point of improvement!
The Sheraton Hsinchu hosts 3 more restaurants; a Chinese restaurant ‘Yue’, and 2 Japanese restaurants; ‘Moon Teppanyaki’ and ‘Kanpai Classic -Japanese Barbeque’. There is also a Lobby Lounge which serves some food, but I won’t recommend that place. It’s not a very inspiring location and the food is not that great. The Chinese restaurant ‘Yue’ was pretty good though and I found that a good place to eat if you don’t want to venture out.
Room
My room was the standard DeLuxe King Bedroom. The bed is very comfortable and the room has a luxurious feel to it. Not a bad place to be when you’re awake and struggling with jet lag! In all the years I visited the Sheraton Hsinchu, I never got an upgrade to a suite despite my (Titanium) status with Marriott/Sheraton. Not that strange, since the hotel has a very high occupancy rate and all the suites are normally booked well in advance.
The Sheraron Hsinchu does have a lounge and I do get lounge access, however, besides getting a drink, the lounge is not really worth visiting if you’re also expecting to get a small bite to eat in the evening. The food selection in the lounge is very limited and certainly won’t keep guests away from the restaurants in the hotel…
Conclusion
The Sheration Hsinchu is my favourite hotel in Hsinchu. The comfortable rooms, on-site restaurant options, and excellent breakfast make it an excellent choice for business and leisure travel. On top of that, there is a Starbucks across the street which is great for a take-away coffee. When you consider staying there, just make sure you reserve your room in time, because it’s a very popular place and can get sold out despite the 770 rooms!
