At the moment, Hyatt is running a promotion via Points.com where Hyatt points can be purchased with a 25% bonus. The promotion runs till January 4th, 2025. But when does it make sense to buy Hyatt points?
When to buy Hyatt Points?
In general, I think it only makes sense to consider buying Hotel Points when you have a specific hotel reservation in mind. These are the steps I recommend taking:
- First make sure you are a member of the hotel program, in this case Hyatt. Being a member will give you better rates (‘member rates’) and of course you can only buy points if you are a member of the program.
- You need to be a member for at least 60 days in order to buy Hyatt points.
- Check the rates of the hotel booking you want to make. Best rates you’re getting on Hyatt.com.
- Check how many points you would require if you would make the hotel reservation using points. I would only look at the points-only rates since cash & points rates in general aren’t that attractive anymore with Hyatt.
- You now need to use a very easy on-line tool where you can immediately see whether it’s cheaper buying points or paying the cash rate. I initially created this tool for myself but decided to put it online so everyone can use this. Use this link; Hyatt points Calculation Tool.
- The tool is very easy to use. But since in this case there is no discount percentage but a points bonus percentage, you’ll need to calculate the 25% bonus percentage. So, if you would need 50,000 points for the hotel reservation for 2 nights, you would specify 40,000 points in ‘bonus points’ and 10,000 points (25%) in the ‘promotion points’. The tool will then display how much you would need to pay – for the 40,000 points – and what the average rate per night would be.
- You can then easily compare that with the online cash rate and determine whether it makes sense to purchase points with this promotion.
- Eventually you can also add some additional points you already have and also want to use for the specific booking. This will of course decrease the total amount of points you need to purchase.
Conclusion
Buying Hyatt points can be a very good strategy to try and pay less for luxury Hyatt stays. The online tool should help you to make a good decision before you even logon to the Points.com website.
Please consider that paying a room with points comes with other benefits. Two major benefits are that Hyatt will waive the resort fee – if applicable – and parking fee! The tool doesn’t take that into account but both resort fee and parking fee can sometimes run up to $100 a day!
One important restriction is that the maximum amount of points you can purchase with Hyatt for this promotion which is 110,000.
Please use this link to Purchase Hyatt points. To logon, you’ll need your World of Hyatt ID, first name, last name, and registered Email.
