Lufthansa A380 Business Class

Lufthansa A380 Business Class – still worth it?

A few weeks ago I flew with Lufthansa A380 Business Class from Delhi to Munich. Is it still worth it flying with the old Lufthansa Business Class, even if you can fly with the majestic A380? All Lufthansa A380’s should be converted to the new Allegris Business Class in 2025. Should you avoid the existing, outdated business class till that conversion is completed? In this review, I’ll tell you all about it!

Looking at the enormous A380 waiting at the gate is always something special. Even if I’ve seen this plane a lot of times in the past, I’m always impressed looking at this fantastic beast. The A380 deserves the best cabin possible and Lufthansa will update the existing Business Class cabin in 2025. That promises to be the upgrade that the A380 finally deserves. Lufthansa did have 14 A380’s in operation before COVID. They sold 6, so now they still have 8 A380’s. All A380’s are now flying out of, and into Munich. I’m really happy to see that Lufthansa brought back the A380 and will spend the money to upgrade the cabins. Unlike Air France which retired all their A380’s during COVID and decided to not bring them back.

Lufthansa Business Class Cabin

If you fly the A380 now, you’ll still be confronted with the old Business Class cabin. And the truth is, this cabin is in a dire need for an upgrade. The 2-2-2 configuration is simply outdated, just like the 2-3-2 Business Class configuration Emirates is using in their 777 planes. But where in the 777 Emirates Business Class cabin, there is still some form of privacy (with a divider that can be raised between the seats), the Lufthansa seats don’t even offer that functionality. Even worse, the space in the footwell is totally unacceptable. This space is so small that I even got a cramp in my legs when I finally was able to get some sleep.

Lufthansa doesn’t offer a mattress topper for their business class seats and to be honest, it’s really required to at least get some form of comfort when the seat is in a lie flat position. Luckily the seat next to me remained empty for the duration of the flight so I just used that blanket as a topper for my seat; that was better than nothing!

Meals

Because my flight out of Delhi left in the middle of the night, I skipped the evening meal. Instead I was looking forward to the breakfast just before landing in Munich. Even though the cabin is below par, at least Lufthansa should be able to serve a decent breakfast, right?…. Unfortunately, the breakfast was very disappointing. The micro-wave oven omelette tasted as if it came straight from the Chemical Bayer Factory, and the sausage wasn’t much better. At least the fruit tasted nice.

We did get a small box of Lindt Chocolate before landing and that was the highlight of the flight….

Other notable mentions

We didn’t discuss about the entertainment selection and screens yet. The screens are actually pretty hilarious; the screens look more like old MS-DOS computer screens from the pre-Windows error… The screens are small and very laggy but to my surprise, they all seemed to be working fine. The move and TV selection is fine but again, also here, an upgrade is long overdue.

What does need to be mentioned is the A380 plane itself. During my trip to India I had several flights which all suffered from turbulence. During the A380 flight, there was no turbulence at all. The size of the A380 definitely has something to do with that, but maybe the pilots are also better trained to avoid turbulence? I thought it was worth mentioning since turbulence is quite a big topic these days.

Conclusion

The question on forehand was whether it’s still worth it flying the existing Business Class Cabin on the Lufthansa A380. If there are other options available, I would avoid the current Lufthansa Business Class cabin. The Business Class seats, especially in lie flat position, are simply not up to standard anymore. In fact, with the extremely tight footwell, they are not comfortable at all. Even the food was disappointing and this is something which can be improved independent of the outdated cabin.
