During last summer, I stayed with the family at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Toronto. Except for a shocking check-in experience which left a bitter taste, the Park Hyatt Toronto was a very nice place to stay for a few days. The hotel is designed in the typically ‘understated luxury’ style – exactly what you would expect from a Park Hyatt hotel. The hotel is in a relatively quiet part of Toronto (Yorkville) where you’ll find the expensive shops, museums, and upmarket restaurants.
Recently I had to be back in Toronto for a relatively short stay. Since I was arriving by train and leaving from the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, the Hyatt Regency Toronto was a more convenient location than the Park Hyatt. The Hyatt Regency Toronto hotel is located right in the middle of the Entertainment District. It’s also within walking distance of the Toronto Union Train Station. Please read my review below of my stay at the Hyatt Regency Toronto hotel.
First impressions
If you want to be right smack in the middle of the busy Toronto Entertainment district, the Hyatt Regency Toronto is perfectly located. I personally prefer a quieter location. Having said that, I didn’t notice any noise nor disturbance while staying in my hotel room.
Even though the décor looks very much outdated, it does look clean and in good condition. A good example is the sofa in the room. A completely outdated design but it looks like it was purchased the day before I arrived! Amazing!
Suite & Breakfast
During check-in I received a complimentary upgrade to a suite thanks to my globalist status. The suite has a separate living room and bedroom which both have a decent size. But the bathroom is small and together with the outdated style, it’s just something you won’t expect to see in a Hyatt Regency Suite. But all appliances work perfectly so besides being in a small shower with a 70’s color scheme, there isn’t really anything else to complain about.
The decor of the living room is hilarious though. I wonder when they will decide to modernise this. Maybe they are waiting for a new Austin Powers movie and they want to be the filming location of choice?
Breakfast is at the lower level of the hotel. It seems this is the area which was renovated back in 2009. The buffet is not spectacular but it’s sufficient and the cappuccino served isn’t too bad.
Conclusion
The Hyatt Regency Toronto Hotel is perfect for a short stay when you are just looking for a no-thrills hotel at a central location. When you don’t care about the décor, but instead just want a good, clean room to sleep and shower, for a decent price, the Hyatt Regency Toronto is the perfect choice. The contrast with the Park Hyatt Toronto couldn’t be any bigger though. From the moment you step into the recently renovated Park Hyatt, you feel you’re entering a special place. A place which is carefully designed with all the modern art and details. But sometimes you don’t need all the luxury and attention. A normal room – even though outdated – will do just fine.
