How to use the Shanghai Airport Link

In this article I’ll review the easiest and most efficient way to move from Shanghai Pudong Airport to Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and train station. This is using the new Shanghai Airport Link train. For 26RMB (roughly 3 Euro), you’ll travel comfortably in 39 minutes from Pudong to Hongqiao. Please read below and find out the details of the Shanghai Airport Link. Also don’t forget to have a look at the video I made of the Shanghai Airport Link (link below).

The Shanghai Airport Link

The Shanghai Airport Link became operational December 27, 2024. It’s by far the most efficient way to move between both Shanghai airports as well as Hongqiao train station. The earliest train leaves at 6AM and the last train leaves at 10PM.

There are 6 stops including the final stop. Please note that in the future, the line will be extended to the new Terminal 3 of Pudong Airport which is – at the time of writing – still under construction.

Until that time, the Terminal 1/2 stop at Pudong Airport is the first station (or final stop) and thus every train departing from Terminal 1/2 at Pudong leaves for Hongqiao.

When you arrive at Terminal 2 of Pudong Airport, you won’t find any signs of the Airport Link – at least when I was there a few weeks ago. However, when you just follow the signs for the Maglev train, you’ll eventually find a big sign for the Airport Link. In fact, that big blue sign is next to the entrance of the Maglev Train.

Before entering the entrance of the Airport Link Train, you can buy your ticket at one of the 3 ticket machines. Just select the ‘Airport Link Line’ (indicated with a grey color), the final station, and you can buy your ticket. Both cash or credit card is accepted.

The train ride is 39 minutes and trains leave every 15 minutes. The train reaches speeds of up to 160 km/h and the biggest portion of the journey is under ground. So don’t expect any nice city views!

Hongqiao Airport & Train Station

When you arrive the Hongqiao Airport, it’s only a few minutes walk to the Hongqiao train station. The train station is clearly indicated with big signs; you cannot miss it!

All high speed trains leave from Hongqiao Train Station included the Fuxing High Speed train which reaches speeds of up to 350 km/h. Please also read my review of the Fuxing train!
